Veterans Field, is it any different from Riverside Park?

 Anonymous:

There is no kind of dishonesty into which otherwise good civil service people more easily and more frequently fall than that of defrauding the people that they work for.

As I see the Veterans Field issue unfold I am reminded of the Riverside Park battle a short time ago. Many of the people who now advocate and vote to sell or provide Veterans Field to the YMCA for a community center were strongly opposed to selling Riverside park and taking open space away from a neighborhood. How is Veterans Field any different except for the fact that it is a different neighborhood?

Promises were made with respect to the status of Veterans Field once the portable classrooms were removed. The promise to the people of the surrounding neighborhoods was that the children would get their fields back for playing soccer, baseball, football or whatever activities fit their day. The promise to the community was that the fields would be returned and open space according to the applicable statutes would be preserved.

There was even a deal made with respect to the state funding of the school projects as has been put out by some in the community.

Well the Parks and Recreation committee of the city council voted in favor of taking the fields away an passed the item along to the full council, Anthony Nolan, Wade Hyslop & Don Macrino all voted to break the promise to the community, the neighborhoods and to the state.

What does this say about these three councilors elected to represent the needs and desires of the people of New London? Can any of them be trusted to do anything that they say they will do? Not likely with this recent action.

It is pretty certain that the item will pass the full council council. Mike Passero the driving force behind this will vote for it and that makes four votes. A referendum will be an option for the members of the community to correct this wrongdoing by these councilors.

Election day is November 5th why would any New London voter put any councilor back in office that has such outright disregard for any neighborhood over another? Why would any New London voter put any councilor back in office that will not ensure that a promise or agreement made by the city is not honored?
