Your Questions For The Mayoral Candidates

We asked you what you haven't heard yet in this election, and have invited the candidates to respond

Last week, we asked if you had any . The six people in the running - write-in candidate Michael Buscetto; Democratic candidate Daryl Finizio; independent candidates Lori Hopkins-Cavanagh, Andrew Lockwood, and Martin Olsen; and Republican candidate Rob Pero - have participated in several debates already. However, some issues have been brought up more than once and we were wondering if you had anything you thought had not been addressed so far.

We've invited each of the mayoral candidates to respond to these questions. Some have conflicts with this time, but we are going to be keeping this story on the front page to allow ample time for everyone to answer. Comments from readers are welcome, provided they are civil and abide by the terms of use.

  1. At this time when there is a lot of dissension in the inhibiting goals of improving public safety and community relations, what will you do to heal the relationship between administration and union?
  2. What is your specific plan to deal with the homeless problem? The reader is asking for "details, not just a conceptual idea."
  3. After this election, the City Council and the new strong mayor will still have no authority or control over the superintendent or the Board of Education. With that in mind, can each candidate explain to the voters specifically how they will be able to improve education in New London?
  4. This past year has revealed two of New London's pressing problems - namely, youth crime, and the poor performance of its public schools. How should the city respond to both of these problems given limited resources and tight budgets?
  5. With respect to economic development in the city, what new business entities (national retailers) would you want to bring to New London and how will you accomplish getting them to locate in New London?
