As protests continue in New York City, offshots of the demonstration have been appearing around the country. This week, an group joined the movement by holding a recurring protest at Parade Plaza. Protesters have been in the plaza from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. since Monday, and will continue the demonstration through Friday.
The Occupy Wall Street movement was organized by Adbusters, whose overall aim is to unify activists to "advance the new social activist movement of the information age" and "topple existing power structures and forge a major shift in the way we live in the 21st century," according to the organization's website. The Occupy Wall Street effort has been ongoing since Sept. 17 and was inspired by overseas movements including Spanish acampadas and the "Arab Spring" protests in Egypt which led to the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak. The organization says the goal of Occupy Wall Street is "to end the monied corruption of our democracy."
