NL Affordable Housing Apartments Get Funds for Makeover

The state will provide $4.8 million for Londonberry Gardens to make a slew of improvements.

Londonberry Gardens is poised to get a substantial makeover after the state announced it will provide $4.8 million for improvements.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy on Thursday announced a total of $18.34 million in grants and loans that will help fund 13 projects in state affordable-housing developments.

Londonberry Gardens, owned and managed by Vesta Corp., consists of 86 rental units in 11 two-story dwellings. Improvements on the docket include "new windows, interior upgrades to kitchens and baths, replacement of existing life safety equipment, exterior building improvements and the conversion of the existing baseboard electric heat system to high efficient central gas boilers," according to a news release from the Governor's Office.

“Increasing the availability of affordable housing is a top priority because the benefits extend far beyond the families and communities immediately impacted,” Malloy said.  “More and more, we understand the economic results — studies show that affordable housing increases spending and employment opportunities, boosts revenue for local governments, and reduces foreclosures and the negative associated costs.  Expanded housing options for our workforce also give employers a competitive advantage when trying to attract top talent to their companies.”

The funding must still get the stamp of approval from the State Bond Commission.
