New London Receives Funding For Brownfields Cleanup

Rep. Joe Courtney announces $400,000 from EPA for cleanup on two si

New London will receive a $400,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency for the cleanup of brownfield sites in New London.

Courtney said the grant was secured through the Renaissance City Development Association. It will be used to remove hazardous substances from a site at the intersection of Howard Street and Shaw Street that was previously developed with residences, a restaurant, and a commercial warehouse that included a bakery, plumber, and boat builder.

The funds will also go toward the cleanup of a brownfield site at the intersection of Howard Street and Hamilton Street, which was formerly developed with a bottling works, appliance warehouse, and chemical manufacturing company.

Courtney said both sites are contaminated with heavy metals and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. Another $200,000 will go toward removing similar contaminants from a former mill and automotive site in Willimantic.

"For many communities in eastern Connecticut, economic growth is stymied by abandoned properties contaminated from prior use. This funding provides the tools to restore such parcels in New London and Willimantic," Courtney said in a statement. "By assisting the clean-up of these sites, EPA is playing a critical role in rehabilitating neighborhoods and fostering economic growth. This is an excellent example of a targeted investment creating new opportunities in our communities."
