New London Animal Control Shelter Badly Damaged By Hurricane Sandy

Dogs safely relocated to Montville Animal Control but the building will need extensive repairs.

A message on the New London Animal Control Facebook page reported that a tree fell Monday night during Hurricane Sandy, badly damaging the building.

The dogs at the shelter and the Animal Control Officer on duty were not injured.

This is the message from the ACO:

As many of you may know, our shelter was hit by a very large tree yesterday during Hurrican Sandy, and all the animals were safely evacuated to another shelter and the ACO who was sitting inside the building is also fine. However, our shelter will be inoperable for a while, and we have 4 adoptable dogs desperately in need of homes. Vlad and Miranda both have albums with pictures, but Storm the Shiba Inu mix and Francine the Lhasa weren't quite so lucky. Their photo shoot with the wonderful Diane Musil Monte was cancelled in the midst of hurricane preparation. I ask all our friends out there to please help us find homes for these great dogs! Share Miranda and Vlad's albums, and tell everyone about Storm and Francine!

Storm is a sweet, friendly Shiba Inu mix. He is already neutered, is about 5-6 years old, and weighs about 35 pounds. He seems social with people and other animals, and likes car rides. He got to ride in the front seat of the van during the building evacuation and was an absolute angel.

Francine is a Lhasa Apso, female, about 7 years old. She loves people, and was recently groomed since she came in in poor shape. The groomer said she was sweet and easy to groom. She is not spayed, and would be happiest in a home with older kids, or even an older couple. She takes power naps to a whole new level! She seems OK with the other animals as well.

We will keep you all updated as much as possible. Please be aware that the buiding has no power, so the answering machine is not working. If you have an EMERGENCY, call the Police department at (860) 442-4444. The best way to reach us will be on Facebook for now, since I am lucky enough to still have power at home. But please be patient. both officers are working and not always able to check messages here. Thank you all for your support. I know we were hopping to get a new building someday, this wasn't really the way we wanted to go about it.
