Nathan M. Caron, a 28-year-old language arts teacher at , has been named the new city clerk of New London.
Mayor-elect Daryl Finizio announced the appointment at a brief ceremony at today. Finizio said City Manager Denise Rose made the interim appointment due to , but that he will reconfirm Caron with other mayoral appointees on Tuesday morning.
“It was a small pool of candidates, of which Mr. Caron had the most diversified experience and the highest education,” said Finizio.
Former City Clerk Clark van der Lyke swore Caron into office at today’s ceremony.
Caron will replace Michael Tranchida, who was asked to step down after 12 years as city clerk and . The appointment was made in order to allow Caron to start the job on Monday.
Caron has a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Connecticut and a master’s degree in education from St. Joseph College. He started teaching last year, and will give up that position to take the city clerk’s job.
“It is really an honor and a privilege to serve the people of New London, and I’m looking forward to it,” he said.
Finizio said support staff will be available to help Caron transition into the position, including van der Lyke and Tranchida, current employees in the , and the city clerks in Groton and Waterford.
Finizio said Assistant City Clerk Dawn Quinn, who was also asked to step down after 12 years in her position, has been asked to stay on in a temporary role to assist in the transition. Quinn’s replacement has not yet been named.

A 28-year-old language arts teacher at Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School has been appointed as the new city clerk.
Nathan M. Caron will assume the office on Monday, replacing outgoing City Clerk Michael Tranchida. Due to stipulations in the City Charter, Caron was hired by City Manager Denise Rose and confirmed by Mayor-elect Daryl Finizio in a brief ceremony at City Hall this evening.
