Gun Owners' Names, Addresses Could Become Public

A West Haven lawmaker has introduced a bill to make public the names of some 170,000 gun owners in Connecticut.

If you own a gun in this state your name and address could become public under a bill introduced in the General Assembly by State Rep. Stephen D. Dargan, D-West Haven.

Dargan filed the proposal in response to the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown that killed 20 children and 6 women on Dec. 14. His proposal would overturn a law passed in Connecticut 20 years ago that keeps private the names and addresses of gun owners.

In an interview with the Hartford Courant, Dargan said he wants gun ownership information to fall under the state's Freedom of Information Act in part so that parents can know whether the parents of their child's friends have guns in their homes.

"Maybe their kids are going over to Johnny Smith's, and maybe they want to see whether they have guns in the house," he told the newspaper.

Dargan's proposal follows another bill that was filed recently that seeks to limit who can own gun ammunition in Connecticut and to keep such ammunition out of the hands of felons. Gun control issues are expected to dominate the General Assembly's winter session, which formally begins next week, in the wake of the Newtown massacre.

Kind of flies in the face of the whole point of the concealed carry law. If you know who is carrying, why not open carry?

Once the names are known & people are robbed or home invasions for the evil to steal ammunition or guns then we will pass a new bill....why the hell don't we post names and addresses in newspaper all criminals and mentally I'll, etc....there is no privacy anymore...would a gun owner name being public stop the Sandy Hook tragedy??? I think not, write a useful bill....

How about if parents take responsibility on their own to acquaint themselves with their neighbors and their children's playmates?

Greg, CT does not have a concealed carry law. You can carry either open or concealed.

I have to agree with Ocean Breeze. Will they also post the names of all the mentally ill and criminally insane?

This is a GREAT idea. Think about it... we could have maps available online that show where all the gun owners live. In fact, we could integrate it with the sex offender maps. Next, we'll add all of the folks that have every had a psych evaluation at an ER or stayed in a psych hospital. Anyone who thinks this is a good idea needs to understand that this is akin to making the DMV database accessible to the public. Consider this... what's more important, knowing that Suzy Homemaker who drives your kids in the carpool has a gun at home? Or that she's got two DUI convictions? I guess this also means that they'll be publishing all police officers' names and addresses, as they have permits to carry. You know which legistlators and pundits will be most against this? The anti-gun ones... who actually own a gun or two. They're afraid they'll be called out as hypocrites. Like NBC's David Gregory, who mocked the NRA's stance on putting armed guards/cops in every school, yet it was revealed that his own children go to a school with armed guards (not just the Secret Service agents there to guard the Obama children, who also attend the school.)
