Finizio Says Coast Guard Will Review Possible New London Museum Sites

Mayor says service and city are working together on Coast Guard Academy expansion needs, national museum

Mayor Daryl Finizio announced today that the Coast Guard will examine several proposals for national museum sites in New London.

Finizio said that following his to meet with Admiral Robert J. Papp, the Coast Guard commandant, the service and the city have agreed to "move forward on determining a location for a national Coast Guard museum." He said the city and service "also agreed to cooperate on future expansion."

Finizio said several proposed sites to locate the museum in New London are available and the National Coast Guard Museum Association will meet in Washington later this month to discuss them.

“The national Coast Guard museum will be a great addition to our community,” Finizio said in a press release. “It will be a source of pride for all New Londoners and for all Americans.”

Finizio also said that no expansion of the Coast Guard Academy is expected for the near future due to fiscal contraints in the service, but that the will work with the academy to determine expansion options within New London once funding is available.
