Finizio Heading To DC To Meet With Coast Guard

New London mayor will meet with Admiral Robert J. Papp, Rep. Joe Courtney, and Senator Joe Lieberman on Coast Guard Academy future

Mayor Daryl Finizio has announced he will travel to Washington, D.C. on Thursday to discuss the city's relationship with the .

Finizio said he will meet with Admiral Robert J. Papp - the commandant of the United States Coast Guard and a 1975 graduate of the academy - as well as Rep. Joe Courtney and Senator Joe Lieberman. Finizio said the group will discuss the options available for the academy to meet its expansion needs within New London.

“I am looking forward to meeting with Admiral Papp and members of the Connecticut congressional delegation,” Finizio said in a press release.  “Our talks with the Coast Guard have been moving in a positive direction and I am convinced that the partnership between the USCG and the city of New London is strong.”

Finizio said he would be personally paying for the trip.

The Coast Guard Academy sought to purchase about half of to expand its campus and construct a shipboard simulator and multicultural center, but this request was . The Coast Guard has since said it may have to relocate some academy services outside of New London. In addition to her talks with Finizio, Rear Admiral Sandra Stosz - superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy - has met with Norwich officials to discuss the possibility of purchasing land there.
