Feds Vow Support in Connecticut Following Hurricane Sandy

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano says the federal government will 'continue to bring in the resources we can' to Connecticut residents suffering from Superstorm Sandy.

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano assured Connecticut residents Thursday that the federal government has their backs in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

"We understand the urgency of the situation," Napolitano said at a press briefing outside Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport, after touring local wreckage with Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and state legislators.

"We'll continue to bring in the resources we can," she said.

Speaking in a city that had 44 percent of its residents without power as of 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Napolitano said the federal government, working with the Red Cross, has provided meals and water to Connecticut residents, and plans to open more disaster recovery centers next week.

"Our aim is to be very proactive," she said of her department, which includes the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Coast Guard.

Napolitano said damage assessments will begin Friday for towns seeking a declaration of emergency.

She urged residents affected by Sandy to register with FEMA for financial aid. Learn more about these programs by visiting FEMA’s website or by calling 800.621.3362. In addition, Napolitano said FEMA will be setting up facilities on the ground to assist individuals and small business owners sign up for the help.

The U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security said she's pleased to report that the number of people in area shelters have gone down and "it's our goal to make [those] shelters temporary."

Before Sandy started to impact the region, the Obama Administration signed a declaration of emergency for the state of Connecticut. Malloy said at the time the declaration would make it easier for Connecticut to seek federal assistance for cleanup efforts post-Sandy.

On Thursday, the governor said he's been on the phone with President Obama four times in the past few days and Connecticut "is getting all the assistance we ask for."

After viewing the damage in Connecticut first-hand, Napolitano said, "It's one thing to hear about the damage, it’s another thing to see it.”

Obama is too busy with his campaign. Please wait a week or two.
REVMAN November 2, 2012 at 03:19 am
He is busy campaigning but he did send Janet Napolitano ????? WHY????
Chris Griffin November 2, 2012 at 12:43 pm
Because FEMA is under the umbrella of Homeland Security.

Fire Obama, or Impeach him for neglegance. Either way he's got to go! Can anyone in the press ask some direct questions of Obama's role or lack there of in Benghazi. Seems to me tha the reality of the situation did not fit Obama's myth that all is well in Lybia. Where are the myth busters in the press?
Dave November 2, 2012 at 02:14 pm
"Peace Maker" get over it. This was a minor attack. How about your idol, George Bush, who ignored all the intelligence for several months leading up to the 9/11 attacks.
Do you enjoy your life or are you constantly angry? I pity you.

Could President Obama, as commander in chief, ordered U.S. Navy Seals into Benghazi during the seven hour attack on the U.S. Embassy?
Yes the U.S. Navy Seals could have been deployed. Will Obama as commander in chief get blamed? No. Hillary Clinton will take the blame. Hurricane Sandy has provided a diversion for President Obama from criticism. Obama certainly looks more presidential touring the storm ravaged sites and making speeches about FEMA than talking about the Middle East. Southern New England, New York and New Jersey. all states that Obama will win this Tuesday have been severely impacted by this terrible storrm. We all hope that everyone will be able to get their homes repaired, businesses back open and losses compensated quickly.

Impeach Obama for Culpable Negligence - News is only now beginning to come out about what went on in Benghazi... Fox News national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin had breaking news tonight regarding the attack on the United States consulate in Libya. She reported that top administration officials decided on the night of September 11th, 2012 after the attack had already begun, not to call together the Counterterrorism Security Group (CSG).
CSG is an interagency group that specializes in both hostage situations and any terror attack on U.S. interests. That decision, according to senior military and intelligence officials, may have stymied some of the response to the attack. According to senior military officials, the administration also did not deploy the interagency team made up of Department of Defense, FBI, CIA and State Department: the Foreign Emergency Support Team (FEST). It was decided that FEST was not to be sent to coordinate an on-the-ground response and help facilitate the FBI’s interests into Benghazi. It took 24 days for the FBI team in Libya to gain access to the compound. I always thought an attack on American soil was an act of WAR.
Chris Griffin November 2, 2012 at 08:36 pm
Glad to help educate you Revman. Maybe you should not have been questioning the President's judgement when you didn't even know the basic facts. It was plainly stated in the article.
Hey Jim, He did put campaign aside and go to New Jersey. He also put the politics aside altogether and worked with Governor Christie to make sure the federal government was there for his constituency. He also sent Napolitano here to CT. Do you think he also should have visited CT? Peacemaker, your off topic. This is an article about federal aid to the victims of Sandy. Did you want some reporter to take time from another reporter asking about fresh water or electricity to grill him about Lybia and his alleged n-e-g-l-e-g-a-n-c-e. The small words can be tough to spell sometimes. Try sounding it out in your head first next time.

Uh Revman and Peace Maker, are you missing the point here? This article was about the director of Homeland Security, the overseeing agency of FEMA, visiting Connecticut. I get that some of you don't like Obama, but can you please direct your comments to the content of the article? Otherwise, find some other article that is at least relevant to your tirade. I am so sick and tired of seeing how some readers can turn ANY article into a political debate. If you want to comment about how Obama has completely mishandled the disaster response to Sandy or there is no such thing as Global Warming, have at it...at least there is a relationship to the content of the above article. In the meantime, can you please let the rest of us have a break from all the political posturing?
REVMAN November 3, 2012 at 09:53 pm
Ok Obama completly mishandled the disaster so he could fly back to Vegas on our tax dollar.
Chris Griffin November 5, 2012 at 03:24 pm
Agreed annoyed .by.politics.
Look at the earlier comments. "Revman" either did not read or did not comprehend the article so I would not hold my breath waiting for a pertinent response. It is bad enough that the two people you mention will turn any article regardless of its content into an opportunity to post their worn out Obama bashing, but to do it when the subject matter is a natural disaster that took lives, property, and caused so many hardships is disgusting.

The mayor and council president will lie and cheat to protect the mayor's unqualified and dishonestRead More people. The council and the council leadership is supposed to act as a check and balance in this new form of government. Mr. Smith is one of those dishonest people. It is sad that this person can be so dishonest and that the so called leaders in the community back the dishonest person rather than standing up for the taxpayers and people that really do live here and pay taxes. As a finance director Mr. Smith knows the importance of the proper tax town for vehicles, so he cannot claim ignorance. Is he is breaking the law because the taxes in Windham are lower or because he truly lives in Windham?
