Occupy the Courts
Join us Friday Jan 20th from 3p-6p to protest "corporate personhood," and the effect that Big Money has on our democracy. Location: Corner of Broad & Huntington Streets, near the entrance to the New London District Superior Courthouse. Superior Court.
Occupy the Courts is a nationwide action marking the second anniversary of the 2009 Supreme Court case Citizens United v. the Federal Election Commission, In their decision, the justices ruled in favor of Big Business, allowing companies like ExxonMobile, AGI, Haliburten and others to give unlimited dollars to our congressmen, claiming corporate political campaigning is protected under the Constitution’s 1st Amendment, the right to free speech.
Such exorbitant donations surely influence our decision-makers. Wouldn’t a million dollars make you feel grateful? As a result - on the most critical issues of our times, such as climate change, health care, financial regulation, war and peace, and more – corporate interests are what our politicians are most aware of, not our own.
Occupy the Courts is spearheaded by Move to Amend, a consortium of groups working to pass a constitutional amendment firmly establishing a.) that money is not speech; and b.) that only human beings, not non-living legal entities, are entitled to constitutional rights.
