Elected Officials Converge On New London

Courtney, Malloy, Murphy in town on two separate trips

Federal and state officials are visiting New London at mid-day on Friday in two separate trips.

Gov. Dannel Malloy and Rep. Joe Courtney will visit State Pier at noon. The purpose of this visit is to announce the Rail Freight Infrastructure Program to improve Connecticut's freight railroads.

Courtney said in a press release that the project will repair or upgrade rail lines, beds, crossings, culverts, and other parts of the Connecticut New England Railroad, New England Central Railroad, Naugatuck Railroad, and Providence and Worcester Railroad.

Massachusetts officials recently announced a $1.5 million effort to improve the New England Central Railroad tracks in Amherst. This line terminates in New London and runs to Vermont's border with Quebec.

Senator Chris Murphy is also in town to tour R&B Fisheries on Smith Street as well as Jeanette T. Fisheries on Ferry Street. Murphy said he is making the trip to hear about Connecticut needs as they relate to a farm bill before Congress.

"Coming off the SNAP challenge, Senator Murphy really wants to dig deeper into the farm bill with Connecticut stakeholders," said spokesperson Kaylie Hanson of Murphy's office.
