Coast Guard Academy Gets EPA Award

New London service academy recognized for green electronics activities

The is one of 25 federal facilities in the United States that has been recognized for environmentally responsible policies on electronics.

The Environmental Protection Agency awarded the academy a 2012 Federal Electronics Challenge Award. The honor, which is sponsored by the EPA as well as the Office of the Federal Environmental Executive, is given to federal facilities and agencies that make an effort to buy greener electronics and reduce the environmental impact of using or disposing of electronic equipment.

The Coast Guard Academy was one of eight recipients of the bronze award. The EPA also announced 10 silver awards, five gold awards, and 10 platinum awards. The agency said that the combined efforts of the winners resulted in $7.8 million in savings and a reduction in greenhouse gases equivalent to taking 6,000 vehicles off the road for one year.

“This recognition is a testament to the efforts of academy personnel to embrace positive practices that foster environmental awareness and support a sustainable future for the service,” said Rear Admiral Sandra Stosz, superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy, in a statement.
