Campaign Notebook: Murphy's Attendance Record Criticized

News and updates from the campaign trail in Connecticut.

Second District

Joseph Courtney (D) was in East Hampton on Wednesday, celebrating the Bevin Bros. Manucfacturing's comeback from a devastating fire last May. Courtney credited the community and the company's workers with putting the bell manufacturer back in business.

Paul Formica (R)
will be campaigning at the University of Connecticut's Storrs campus today.

Senate

Linda McMahon’s campaign scrutinized U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy’s record again and claims that the congressman missed three-fourths of all committee hearings. Hearst Newspapers performed their own audit and came up with similar results.

“How can Congressman Murphy look the people of Connecticut in the eye and claim he deserves a promotion when he never even showed up for the taxpayer-funded job he already has?” said Corry Bliss, McMahon’s campaign manager.

Murphy’s campaign says McMahon is just trying to deflect the conversation about Social Security.

"Linda McMahon is desperately trying to change the subject as pressure mounts on her campaign following recent revelations that she unveiled her proposal to end Social Security with a `sunset provision' at a tea party meeting in April," Murphy spokesman Eli Zupnick said in a statement, reports the Connecticut Post.

Fifth District

Politico reports that a poll commissioned by a right-leaning organization shows Andrew Roraback with a seven point lead over Elizabeth Esty. The poll, conducted by American Viewpoint, also shows Linda McMahon with an 11 point lead over Chris Murphy.

Third District

Rosa DeLauro (D): The Hill reports that the Democrats’ strategy to turn Medicare into a key voter issue is paying off. DeLauro was cited in the article for saying that vice presidential hopeful Paul Ryan’s Medicare plan would send the country “back before 1965” when the entitlement program was first created.

Wayne Winsley (R)
spent Wednesday on the campaign trail. According to Facebook, his schedule include stops at the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection breakfast, a business luncheon in New Haven, a press conference and finally, a candidates’ forum in Middletown.

Fourth District

Jim Himes (D): Himes’ campaign is sharing older news articles about Himes. One of them, published by Wilton Patch, looks at Himes’ decision in 2010 to “break party lines and step out against deficit spending.”

Steve Obsitnik (R)
recently stopped by Francesa’s in Norwalk to tour the eatery while on the campaign trail. “Sure looks like [the owner] built that to me!” said one commenter.

This is very clear Jeff Smith is a liar! Either he lied about living in New London, or he lied onRead More his political contribution forms. Does it really matter when or about what he lied? NO he is still a liar. Jeff Smith apparently has registered to vote in New London yet his vehicle is registered in Windham, state law dictates that he has 30 days to change his registration to his town of residence. Jeff Smith has no respect for the laws of this state. Which is true the car registration or the voter registration? Jeff smith is in violation of the law either way. The city council president was made aware of this when Kathleen spoke to the council. What will council president Passero do about this? Nothing is the talk around town. Passero is taking his marching orders from the mayor, the mayor likes Jeff Smith, he will spin the numbers however the mayor tells him. Passero has no choice he has made his deal with the devil. Jeff Smith is the person with his hands on the money in the city and he is not an honest man! The saga of the Whaling City gets worse and worse.

The mayor and council president will lie and cheat to protect the mayor's unqualified and dishonestRead More people. The council and the council leadership is supposed to act as a check and balance in this new form of government. Mr. Smith is one of those dishonest people. It is sad that this person can be so dishonest and that the so called leaders in the community back the dishonest person rather than standing up for the taxpayers and people that really do live here and pay taxes. As a finance director Mr. Smith knows the importance of the proper tax town for vehicles, so he cannot claim ignorance. Is he is breaking the law because the taxes in Windham are lower or because he truly lives in Windham?
