Bond Commission Approves $1 Million For New London Community Health Center

Money will be used to bring remainder of facility up to date

The State Bond Commission has approved $3.5 million in funding for Community Health Center, Inc., including $1 million for renovations at the New London facility.

The , located at 1 Shaws Cove, is "the medical home for one in every five New London residents," according to a press release from Paul Mayer of the CHC. The facility constructed an additional 3,000 square feet of space in 2010, and the remaining 5,000 square feet will be renovated to upgrade exam rooms, improve patient flow, and create patient service areas for laboratory, eligibility screening, patient registration and reception, and patient education.

“We thank Senator Andrea Stillman for her support of this funding and our work,” said Alejandro Melendez-Cooper, director of CHC’s New London and Groton sites. “This renovation is essential to achieving the efficiency, comfort, patient satisfaction and comprehensiveness that are part of the patient-centered medical home model.”

Of the remaining funds, $1 million will go toward the CHC in Bristol for new construction, while $1.5 million will go toward renovation and expansion of the Danbury CHC.

The CHC was founded in 1972 and focuses on providing health care, dental care, and other services for the uninsured and underserved. It has 12 locatiosn in Connecticut.
