Two New London Stores Robbed Overnight

Police investigate thefts from Cumberland Farms, Sam's Food Store

The is investigating a pair of similar convenience store robberies which occurred overnight.

Deputy Chief Peter Reichard said police received a call at about 4:20 a.m. today that a man armed with a large knife robbed the at 485 Ocean Ave. Reichard said the incident was similar to another robbery at the on Montauk Ave. at about 11 p.m. on Thursday evening. In each case, the man displayed the knife in a threatening manner, took money, and left on foot.

Officers established a perimeter after each robbery and spoke with store Extended searches involving a K-9 unit also took place but failed to locate a suspect.

The suspect in each case was described as a man approximately six feet tall with a thin build. He wore a mask during the robberies along with a a dark hooded sweatshirt, light colored long pants, and white sneakers.

Reichard advised businesses with late night hours to take precautions such as requiring customers to remove sunglasses or hooded sweatshirts, making regular transfers of money from the cash register to a safe, and making sure surveillance equipment and lights are functioning properly.
