You never know when a traffic stop is going to turn into something bigger. At about 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday October 22, New London Police noticed a man driving without a seat belt and talking on a cell phone as he traveled on Bank Street.
Police pulled the car over and, after obtaining additional information from Connecticut Adult Probation Officers, learned that the driver may be in possession of a handgun. Police searched the vehicle and found a .380 semi automatic pistol.
Police took the driver, Jared M. Gomez, 20, into custody without incident. Gomez is charged with having weapons in a motor vehicle and with criminal possession of a firearm. Oh, yes, and he's also charged with failure to wear a seat belt and with using a cell phone while driving. Gomez is currently being held at the New London Police Department on a $50,000 Cash Surety Bond.
