Three Stores Fined For Tobacco Violations

Tobacco products sold to youth during compliance check

Three New London stores have been fined and face further possible sanctions after selling tobacco to a minor during a compliance check.

According to a press release from Deputy Chief Marshall Segar of the , 24 establishments were visited during an unannounced compliance inspection today. The inspection was conducted by the department as well as the Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program, a part of the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.

A youth under the age of 18 and employed by the program entered the stores in an attempt to purchase tobacco products. Segar said at 34 Truman Street, at 298 Bank Street, and at 290 Broad Street all sold tobacco to the youth.

The three stores were fined $200 for violation of a state statute prohibiting the sale of tobacco to people under the age of 18. They were also given administrative sanctions by the state Department of Revenue Services, which issues licenses for selling tobacco.
