Thief Caught Red-Handed—With One Glove Missing

A New London Police Officer responded to a burglar alarm at a business only to discover the suspect had left a trail of evidence of stolen cigarettes and a lost glove.

At 12:39 a.m. on December 24, a New London Police Officer heard a burglar alarm going off in the vicinity of Huntington Street. Upon closer investigation, the officer discovered the front glass window of California Fruit at 98 Huntington Street had been broken. He also noticed a man walking away from the scene toward Federal Street.

The officer stopped the man, who had a fresh cut to his head and glass fragments in his hair. He was also wearing just one glove. Officers searched the area and recovered the second glove on the sidewalk between where the suspect had been stopped and the business that had been burglarized. Several packs of cigarettes were lying next to the glove. They were the same brand that police determined had been stolen from the business.

Police arrested the suspect, Germaine Carter, 34, of 54 Mountain Avenue, New London. Carter is charged with burglary in the third degree, larceny in the 6th degree, and criminal mischief in the second degree. He was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital to be treated for his injuries and was then held on a $50,000 bond pending his arraignment in New London Superior Court today.
