UPDATED: Man Shot By Officers Identified

Man shot by police in critical condition at Yale-New Haven

The Connecticut State Police Department has identified the driver of a stolen truck as well as the officer who shot him during an incident on Wednesday.

According to a press release from Lt. Paul Vance, public information officer for the Department of Public Safety, 27-year-old Curtis Cunningham of New Haven was shot by Officer Thomas Northup, who was been with the department for three and a half years. Northup has been placed on administrative duty pending the investigation.

Vance said the driver of the truck reported the truck stolen at about 4:36 p.m. on Wednesday. The driver had been making regular ice deliveries in town.

Vance said Northup was taking a complaint from a resident at when he saw the truck turn onto Jefferson Ave. and flip over on its side. He said Northup reported the incident and approached the truck from the front. Vance said the officer , who was standing up inside the cab, after the man failed to comply with orders to show his hands.

Vance said on Thursday that Cunningham was in serious condition at Yale-New Haven Hospital after undergoing surgery. A hospital spokesperson said Friday that Cunningham was in critical condition.

Detectives from the Eastern District Connecticut State Police Major Crime Squad were assigned to investigate the incident at the request of the New London State's Attorney's Office. Troopers took several witness statements and gathered physical and forensic evidence.

The last shooting involving officers with the New London Police Department occurred in May, when 50-year-old Kevin Kenny was . Kenny survived and was later after police determined that he had made a false report in an effort to commit "suicide by cop."

Prior to that incident, the last shooting occurred in 1999 when New London officers shot and killed a suspect.
