Dillon Herman, 24, charged in dispute early on Sunday

Police arrested a 24-year-old Preston man early on Sunday morning after he allegedly fired a gun at another man during a drug dispute.

Herman Dillon, of 15 Lake of Isles Road, was charged with criminal attempt to commit first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, carrying a loaded firearm while under the influence of liquor, breach of peace, discharging a firearm within city limits, and third-degree assault. He was held on $75,000 cash or surety bond.

According to Capt. Steve Crowley of the , Dillon got into a disagreement with the man, whom he did not know, over a request for marijuana. The incident happened in the municipal parking lot off Eugene O'Neill Drive. Crowley said Dillon was intoxicated and also said his truck had been stolen, but that this did not turn out to be true.

Crowley said Dillon took out a gun and pointed it at the man, who ran down the alley between the and before tripping and falling. Dillon stood over him and fired a shot into the ground. Crowley said the man tried to run and fell a second time, at which point Dillon hit him in the head with the gun. Officers on foot patrol arrived after receiving the report of shots fired and arrested Dillon.

Police seized the firearm and a pistol permit from Dillon, and also recovered a bullet and shell casings. The man was not shot in the incident, but was taken to for treatment of cuts and bruises suffered in the assault. Crowley said the man is not being identified because he is fearful of reprisal.
