Roommate Charged in Hope Street Homicide

New London police took dead man's roommate into custody Friday and charged him with murder.

The roommate of a man found dead in an apartment on Hope Street on Christmas Day has been arrested and charged with murder after police say he confessed to the crime.

Sebastian Tzampop, 29, was charged with the murder of Antonio Chajon, 39, and held at New London Police Headquarters in lieu of $1 million bond. He will be arraigned Monday morning in New London Superior Court.

Tzampop was among many residents of 15 Hope Street questioned Friday by investigators from both the New London Police Department and the Connecticut State Police. Tzampop, according to a release from New London Deputy Chief Peter Reichard, "supplied detectives with a full confession to his involvement in the death."

Tzampop, who has been arrested by New London police before, and Chajon are both originally from the village of Chocojan, Guatemala, according to police.

Late on Christmas morning, police responded to 15 Hope Street and discovered Chajon's body on a bedroom floor. A visual inspection showed signs of trauma, and the state police Eastern District Major Crimes Squad was called in to help process the scene for physical evidence.

An autopsy performed by the Office of the Chief State's Medical Examiner Friday concluded that Chajon's death was caused "compression of the neck with blunt injuries of head and trunk," according to the NLPD release, and was officially ruled a homicide.

If anyone has any information regarding this incident, police request that you call the detective division of the New London Police Department at 860-447-1481. All calls will be kept confidential.
