Police arrest 20-year-old suspect after morning shooting

Police have arrested a suspect and are seeking a second man after a morning shooting left a man dead.

Deputy Chief Marshall Segar of the said a man was fatally shot in an apartment at 252 Montauk Ave. at 4:17 a.m. Segar said an investigation by the New London Police Department, State Police Major Crimes Unit, and New London County State's Attorney's Office determined that two men committed the crime and fled the scene.

Along with the Old Saybrook Police Department, Connecticut State Police, and Department of Energy and Environmental Police, New London officers arrested 20-year-old Evan J. Holmes later in the day. Holmes, who was apprehended at the Day's Inn on Route 1 in Old Saybrook, is charged with murder, home invasion, and first-degree burglary.

Police are also seeking 18-year-old Davion Smith, of 93 State Pier Road, on the same charges. Smith is described as a five feet, four inches tall with a weight of 130 pounds and dark complexion. A photo is included in this article.

Segar said Smith remains at large and should be considered armed and dangerous. He said Smith is believed to be in the greater New Haven area.

Segar said the victim is not being named at this time.

According to an article in The Day, Holmes was sentenced to 18 months in prison in March after he was convicted of shooting then 17-year-old Idris Elahi in the foot in April of 2010. The article says that Holmes was trying to resolve an argument between two groups of teenagers and fired the shot toward the ground. Elahi is one of six people charged in the October 2010 slaying of 25-year-old Matthew Chew.
