Prisoner Charged With Starting Fire In Cell

Woman, 25, accused of concealing lighter

A 25-year-old woman arrested by the New London Police Department was charged with additional crimes on Tuesday evening after she was accused of starting a fire in her cell.

According to police records, Kamel Charity Taylor, who gave her address as the , was arrested shortly before 5:30 p.m. in the area of 21 Montauk Avenue. Taylor was initially charged with threatening and interfering with police.

Deputy Chief Marshall Segar said Taylor was processed and put in a holding cell at the police department's headquarters. Segar said Taylor managed to conceal a lighter during a search that is part of the booking process and started a fire in the cell using toilet paper. Segar said patrol supervisors are investigating the incident and that no one was injured in the fire.

Taylor was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree arson, and disorderly conduct in connection with the fire. She was held on a total of $30,000 cash or surety bond.
