UPDATE: Police Withholding Identity Of Man Who Fell From Bridge

Man jumps or falls from tower of Amtrak bridge over Thames River

Groton police are not releasing the name of the man who either jumped or fell to his death from the Amtrak Bridge early Thursday morning, pending notification of his family.

Technically, the man was on the New London side of the Thames River at the time of his death, although the incident began as a Groton police matter.

New London Deputy Chief Marshall Segar estimated that the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. or 4 a.m. Thursday. The Coast Guard assisted in the recovery of the body.

According to a press release from Groton Town Police late Thursday afternoon, that department received a call at approximately 2:23 am, requesting a so-called well-being check “of a male resident ofGroton whose location was unknown upon the initial report. A short time later, the male was observed by authorities in the vicinity of Fairview Ave but fled.”

Police next located him on the Amtrak Bridge spanning the Thames River. According to the release, the man “later fell to his death from the bridge into the river.” New London police had characterized the death as a suicide. Groton Police say “the death has been determined to be non-criminal in nature."

Also assisting were Connecticut State Police K9 Unit, Groton City, New London and Amtrak Police Departments, the US Coast Guard, and Electric Boat, Groton City Fire Department, Groton Ambulance and Medic 12 for their assistance in this investigation.
