Police Announce Arrests In "Murder For Hire" Plot

Three detained in plan discovered by officers

Three men have been arrested after police uncovered an alleged "murder for hire" plot early Thursday morning.

Police arrested 26-year-old Gerrardo Carrillo of 64 Fawn Hill Road in Westbrook, 28-year-old Elmer A. Melendez of 208 Crystal Ave., and  35-year-old Antonio Pena of 187 Huntington Street, according to a press release by Deputy Chief Marshall Segar of the .

All three men are charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Carrillo and Melendez have also been charged with criminal attempt to commit murder and weapons in a motor vehicle. Pena was arrested in New Haven today, while Carrillo and Melendez were arrested by New London officers at 5 a.m. on Thursday.

Segar said the trio is being held on $1 million bond each.

"Due to the compelx nature of the case, all warrants and arrest information have been sealed by the court," he said.

Carrillo and Melendez have no criminal history in Connecticut, according to state records. Pena was convicted of possession of narcotics in 2010 in New London and given a suspended one-year prison term with 18 months of probation.
