From the New London Police Department Facebook Page:

The New London Police Department is very sorry to share with you that one of our finest police canines has passed away.

Ike, who was handled by Officer Matthew Galante, from 2004 until Matt’s promotion to Detective in 2009, passed away unexpectedly [on December 12]. Since his retirement, Ike has lived as a very happy and loved member of the Galante family.

Ike wasn’t “just any” police K9. He was recognized as one of the elite police dogs in the state! He and his handler were the 2008 recipients of the highly-coveted, gold standard, “Daniel Wasson Memorial K9 Award” by the Connecticut Police Work Dog Association for their amazing accomplishments and work for the citizens of New London.

As a patrol dog, Ike pursued and assisted in the apprehension of dangerous suspects; locating armed suspects; helping neighboring police agencies in many efforts, including searching for and finding a suicidal woman in the woods of Norwich; and even teaching New London youth about police K9s.

The Department expresses our sincerest condolences to whole Galante family as they struggle through this extremely difficult time.
