New London Police Crack Drug Case After Entering Moving Vehicle

A suspect under surveillance fled by driving in reverse until the car ran down an embankment and into the stairway to a home on Adelaide Street. Two people have been arrested for possession with intent to sell 27 bags of crack cocaine.

A Press Release from New London Police Department

Officers assigned to the New London Police Department VIS & Narcotics Unit had been conducting  surveillance on a vehicle occupied by a subject known to them at a fast food establishment on Colman Street.

On October 3, at approximately 10 p.m., officers spotted the same subject in the same car in the area of Hodges Square, at which time the car parked in the street alongside 27 Adelaide Street. Officers again conducted a surveillance of this vehicle and called for a marked patrol car for assistance.

The uniformed officer who responded to assist the VIS officers approached the parked vehicle occupied by the subject and an unknown female passenger, at which time the suspect shifted his car into reverse and attempted to flee from police. The female passenger attempted to exit the car as it began to move and was pulled from the vehicle to safety by officers.

A police officer then entered the vehicle through the open passenger door and attempted to stop the car that was moving in reverse in attempt to flee. In doing so the vehicle traveled down a small embankment and came to rest against the front steps of 27 Adelaide St, causing minor damage to the car and a front stairway support to the house.

The officer received minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital and released. The subject operating the vehicle was not injured. The female passenger received minor cuts and abrasions and received first aid at the scene. Police seized 27 packets of  crack cocaine and $778 from within the vehicle and on the operator's person.

Following this incident subject Gentry Abson, 41, of 298 Hamilton Ave, Norwich, was placed under arrest and charged with illegal possession of a narcotic substance, illegal possession of a narcotic substance with the intent to sell, interfering with a police officer, criminal mischief in the third degree, and two counts of reckless endangerment in the first degree.
