Arrest Warrants Issued In New London Motorcycle Club Stabbing

New London Police Department issue warrants for club leaders Juan and Jose Roman charged after fight at Wild Style Motorcycle Club

The New London Police Department has issued arrest warrants for the leaders of the Wild Style Motorcycle Club in connection with a Sept. 22 brawl that left one man with life-threatening injuries.

Deputy Chief Peter Reichard said the warrants charge Jose Roman, 34, of 241 Elm Street, and Juan Baptisa-Roman, 31, of 5 Lorenzo Street in Waterford, with first-degree assault and carrying a dangerous weapon. The men are siblings, and Roman is the president of the club while Baptisa-Roman is vice president. The warrants call for both men to be held on a $400,000 bond.

The men are accused of stabbing 26-year-old Anthony Swift of New London in the fight, which broke out inside the club located at the rear of 130 Bank Street and extended to the parking lot and South Water Street. Police responded to a report of a stabbing at 3:30 a.m. and found Swift suffering from multiple wounds caused by an edged weapon. He was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for emergency surgery and later released.

Three other men were also injured in the altercation. Jairo Perez, 28, of Guilford, suffered several head and facial injuries after being struck by a large wooden object. Henry Albino, 31, of New London, had lacerations to his face and ear. Miguel Albino, 33, of New London, suffered a possible broken leg while trying to run from the site. All three men were treated and released from Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.

"Through the intensive investigative efforts of detectives, police were able to determine that motorcycle club president Jose Roman and vice president Juan Baptista-Roman were responsible for the assault injures suffered by the stabbing victim," said Reichard.

The city's zoning enforcement officer has since issued a cease and desist order to the building owner and club, saying the club did not have the necessary zoning permit to be at the site. The correspondence is included on the agenda for a special meeting of the Planning and Zoning Commission on Thursday.

Roman has a misdemeanor criminal history, including convictions for reckless driving and possession of less than four ounces of marijuana. Baptista-Roman's only criminal history in Connecticut is a 2011 conviction for driving under suspension, for which he received a suspended 60-day jail sentence.

May we know who the "building owner and club" is? I'd like to know who has been allowing this club to operate illegally for 10 YEARS!
Ashley Campbell September 28, 2012 at 08:50 PM
Neither has a record or history of domestic or violent crimes. A suspected broken leg? Someone needs to be blamed so its easiest to blame the guys who "run the club" instead of looking into what the cause of the fight was. Boudica if you read the paper you would know the capano family owns the building and has never had an issue with these guys
Spencer September 28, 2012 at 08:56 PM
Scott Capano and his family have owned the building for a little over 2 years--of the 10 years the club has been there. The Capano family owns The ShopRite stores in the area, (Norwich, NL and I think one more). The original plan was to build an Irish Pub--which he got permission from the planning and zoning commision for in 2010. Yeah--the same zoning commission taht apparently didn't know the club was there for 10 years. I am not sure of the knowledge of The Capano's family of the activities, other then collecting the rent for the space. However--after having some exposure to the heavy charitable works of ShopRite, I am honestly under the belief there was no intentions on the side of the Capano's family.

The writer failed to find the felony conviction of sale of a hallucinogenic drug where Jose was given a 3 year suspended sentence after one year served.
Spencer September 28, 2012 at 09:48 PM
I am under the understanding that the space was rented out by a real estate agent it has nothing to do with the Capanos family.
becky maynard September 28, 2012 at 10:32 PM
Juan is not the VP!!!! he hasn't had anything to do with the club for 2 years.. Jose is the president but he did nothing wrong.people need to stop judging other people if they don't have all the facts. there was a lot of people and no one knows what happened!!! what happened to innocent till proven guilty?? people need to learn to leave the past in the past.we all have a pass watch out how u open your closet door!!!!
Ashley Campbell September 28, 2012 at 11:40 PM
If i could like that i would becky, they are not a major bike organization or gang. They do stunts and tricks, they have never hurt anyone before or looked for trouble. They welcome people to have fun and hang out
Greg September 29, 2012 at 12:44 AM
Your right innocent until proven guilty and there where alot of people there at the time but every body know snitches get stitches. No one wants to come forward because of repercussions. With the amount of problems going on in NL, people getting stabbed, beaten, shots fired all over the place, no one is going to want to say any thing. But that's just my take on it.
sir DUNE September 29, 2012 at 12:44 AM
wildstyle vp (NEW HAVEN CHPTER) no we`re not a gang but yes we are a major club in CT.. we never look for trouble so im sure my brothers our innocent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
silvinia September 29, 2012 at 12:48 AM
Let's check into the criminal history of the victims I can guarantee they are not so clean!!!!!
Carol D. Fox September 29, 2012 at 12:28 PM
Your absolutely right silvinia. But even though one of them has a long criminal record including assault, that doesn't mean that a career criminal can't be a victim. It could very well be that the victims are ganging up on the club members. The Courts will find the truth. But, the whole altercation comes at a bad time in New London where there has been so much press about public safety. Even though they have been quiet tenants for a long time, the bottom line is they did not have a permit to operate the club.
Emily Kendall September 29, 2012 at 01:11 PM
Someone must have come forward to make a statement that these two were involved or an arrest would not have taken place. Still presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Melissa Maynard September 29, 2012 at 01:17 PM
People really need to get their facts straight before opening their mouths!!!!! I know these 2 are innocent and Ill stand by that 150%
Spencer September 29, 2012 at 01:22 PM
Carol--regarding the not having a permit to operate the club? That happens to be a crime in this State.
Spencer September 29, 2012 at 01:28 PM
The police need to investigate exactly what happened detail, by detail. Not go after who they 'think are responsible'. The two person of intrest, might not have even been on the scene where the incident started. If they were...were they the ones involved in whatever the actual argument started with? Where they the fighters, or the guys who tried to break up the fight? If it started with a bunch of yahoos inside the club--but most of the incident took place outside the club--would that say then that these two guys might have tried to evict those who were braling inside the club--and those individuals then carried on the fight down the block?? There are so many questions that you just can't say, "Hey we are arresting these guys--because they own and operate the place, so they are involve." Yes--charge them with not having a permit for operating a business--but don't charge them with the assault--until it is absolutely clear that they are the assaulters---or if they are the one who tried to stop this thing.
In The Know September 29, 2012 at 04:16 PM
Spencer Of course the police have investigated exactly what happened which has led to these two arrests. You cannot have a judge sign an arrest warrant without cause, and you cannot present an arrest warrant without facts. Their arrest had nothing to do with the fact that they own or are associated with the club. Are you suggesting they attempted to break up the fight? You cannot utylize violence to break up the fight and expect to not be arrested. If you know so much about their involvment then you should contact tthe NLPD to assist in their defense.
Spencer September 29, 2012 at 04:24 PM
In the know--u are obviously not 'in the know!!' Please re read my statement. There is nothing in there that indicates exactly what happened. It is all scenerios--of what might have happened. I was not there--so I obviously do not know what happend. The police did not give a full, DETAILED report, so we do not know what happened. We won't know who is guilty until somebody is proven guilty. Oh wait--from what you are saying--I guess you already proved them guilty?
Dirk Langeveld September 29, 2012 at 04:46 PM
Just made some changes to the article and headlines to clarify that the warrants have been issued on these charges but that the men have not yet been arrested.
Carol D. Fox September 29, 2012 at 04:54 PM
Spencer, you are not reading what In the Know wrote. The police CANNOT get the State's Attorney or a Judge to sign a warrant for one's arrest unless there are facts on that warrant. We only know what the paper reports? How do you know that the police do not have a detailed report? As far as I know , if there is an open investigation, the police do not like to reveal the details in that investigation. If you really want to be in the know, find out their court dates and go to court.
In The Know September 29, 2012 at 05:00 PM
Spencer As my name implies I am in the know. I was simply trying to say to you that you have to have cause to make the arrest. And yes you are right the report is limited so everyone that is not in the know can only speculate such as you are doing. As you stated you were not there but the NLPD always investigates all the angles and that will be revealed to you through additional news paper articles. It does not matter if I think they are guilty or not that is a job for the courts I am just saying there is obviously enough to arrest these guys. Thanks for you input
In The Know September 29, 2012 at 05:09 PM
Carol Thanks for assisting in clarifying ...you're right on with my point
Tracy Ducheneau September 29, 2012 at 06:22 PM
whoever stabbed Anthony Swift should be charged with attempted murder. If he wasnt rushed to Yale New Haven and didnt have that surgery as promptly as he did he probably wouldnt be here. And as usual, all you people, argue over the dumbest things, and defend the people that the police are investigating. How about ANTHONY SWIFT, HAPPY YOU MADE IT, MAY YOU RECOVER FULLY, AND MAY YOUR ATTACKERS BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE.
Tracy Ducheneau September 29, 2012 at 06:35 PM
Silvinia- you are ignorant. Lets Not look into the criminal back ground of the victims, because it is totally irrelevant. NO ONE has the right to pick up, or pull out a weapon and damn near gut someone like a fish unless it is self defense which it was not. The fact that you would imply any of the victims possibly deserved being assaulted based on there criminal history disgusts me.
George Lazare September 29, 2012 at 07:22 PM
Through the intensive investigative efforts of detectives, police were able to determine that motorcycle club president Jose Roman and vice president Juan Baptista-Roman were responsible for the assault injures suffered by the stabbing victim," said Reichard..... Sounds like the Police had ample cause to arrest these two. I know NLPD has issues but I would be hard pressed to accuse them of arresting people for the hell of it
Aaron biggin October 01, 2012 at 03:22 AM
Fyi a warrant can be issued on something as little as hear say! So as far as the police having enough evidence to issue a warrant DOES NOT IMPRESS ME! That could be something as simple as a moron with a big mouth making a statement about something they may not have in fact really even saw or heard! I personally know most of the club members and every one of them is a productive stand up person! These arent street thugs there a bunch of men with a hobby! Bikes! And as far as im concerned with there priors, gimme a break in this day and age weeds about legal! And the age they are and areas they were raised i dont think their rap sheets are too bad! In a nut shell, know em both and i cant see it! Think the fingers just bein pointed in the most convienient direction! Not innocent til proven guilty! Guilty til proven innocent! Thats the way it really works!!!
Ashley Campbell October 01, 2012 at 12:50 PM
Well said aaron.
William Desmond October 01, 2012 at 01:17 PM
Come on everyone we all know these two are victims of circumstance and probably never did anything wrong in their lives.
