New London Man Sentenced To Four Years In Prison For Illegal Firearm Possession

A 23-year-old New London man has been ordered to serve four years in prison following his conviction on a charge of illegally possessing a firearm.

Robert Cabanban Jr. was sentenced by United States District Judge Stefan R. Underill in the Bridgeport federal court to serve 48 months behind bars as well as three years of supervised release, according to Deirdre M. Daly, Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

According to court documents, the New London Police Department searched Cabanban's residence on Sept. 26 after he sold heroin from his Maple Street apartment on two occasions. Officers seized 12 grams of heroin, packaging materials for narcotics, and a loaded .380-caliber semiautomatic pistol.

Daly said Cabanban returned to the residence during the search and tried to flee from police. He was caught soon after and found to have $6,220 in cash.

Cabanban has a felony criminal record, including convictions for possession of narcotics with intent to sell and third-degree burglary. He pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon.

In addition to the NLPD, the case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
