New London Man Sentenced To 15 Years In Sexual Assault

A 41-year-old New London man has been sentenced to serve 15 years in prison following his conviction on charges that he sexually abused two young girls in 2011.

Harold L. Waites was sentenced today in the New London Superior Court to serve 20 years in prison, suspended after 15 years. Judge Arthur C. Hadden also ordered Waites to serve 20 years of probation, which conditions to include registering as a sex offender and abiding by all sex offender probation conditions, having no contact with the victims or their families, having no unsupervised contact with minors, undergoing substance abuse and sex offender evaluation and treatment, not using any alcohol or illegal drugs, and attaining full-time employment.

According to The Day, Waites was charged with touching the genitals of two girls - then ages 9 and 10 - in 2011 after a night of drinking. At a March trial, the jury found Waites not guilty of two counts of first-degree sexual assault but convicted him of two counts each of fourth-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor.
