[UPDATED] Man Dies Following Porch Collapse In New London

The apartment complex at 23 North Hawthorne Drive is now condemned as the rear porches and staircase are the only secondary access to the apartments.

Police have identified the man who was fatally injured when a stairwell porch collapsed beneath him at an apartment complex in New London yesterday as Jonathan Deptulski, 32, of Uncasville. The accident happened at about 4:30 p.m. on October 21 at 23 North Hawthorne Drive, which is one of several large multi-residential apartment buildings in the area.

Deptulski sustained a severe head injury as a result of the fall when the stairs collapsed. New London Police responded to the scene along with a New London Fire Department Ambulance. Deptulski was transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital but he succumbed to his injuries. An exact determination of the cause of death will be forthcoming from the State Medical Examiner's Office.

Following the accident, the New London Building Department condemned the property, which is known as Nutmeg Apartments, because the rear porches and outside staircase are the only secondary access to the apartments.
