Man Cited After Dog Shot Dead

Pit bull killed after it attacks occupants and other pit bull at garage on Blackhall Street

The owner of a pit bull was cited by police on Monday after the animal attacked a dog and person at a neighboring property and was shot dead.

Sgt. Michael Strecker of the said 25-year-old Michael Edwards of 14 Blackhall Street was cited for having a roaming dog and loose dog. Strecker said Edwards' pit bull entered the garage of Great Neck Auto at 18 Blackhall Street at about 4:28 p.m. and was acting aggressive toward the occupants there.

Strecker said the dog attacked another pit bull in the garage and bit the hand of a man who tried to separate the animals. When the Edwards' dog again attacked the other dog and began biting its neck, an occupant of the garage shot and fatally wounded Edwards' dog.

The man who was bitten was taken to for treatment. Strecker said the man who shot Edwards' dog had a valid pistol permit and no further charges are pending at this time.
