Mitchell defeats Emerson 19-6 in men's lacrosse

The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team defeated Emerson College 19-6 on Thursday. The following information was provided by David Longolucco, sports information director for Mitchell College:

Junior Adam Grillo (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) and freshman Shane Sullivan (Quaker Hill, Conn./Waterford) led the Mariners’ attack. Grillo finished with five goals and an assist for six points while Sullivan tallied four goals and added three helpers for a game-high seven points. Freshmen Demetre Lyras (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) and Erik Vasquez (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino) each added three goals as Mitchell improved to 5-2 overall on the season.

Emerson (0-8 overall) hung around for the first seven minutes of the contest before Mitchell broke the game open. The Mariners scored nine of the final 10 goals in the first half to lead 11-3 at the break. Lyras netted all three of his goals in the first stanza while Grillo had four.

Mitchell outscored Emerson by an 8-3 margin in the second half to close out the win. Freshman goalie Peter Eshenfelder (Quaker Hill, Conn./Waterford) finished with 11 saves against 32 shots.

The Mariners were lethal on extra-man opportunities, scoring four goals in seven chances. Mitchell also went 19-for-23 on clear attempts and held a 38-22 edge in ground balls.

Mitchell will next host Wheelock College on Saturday, April 9 at 2 p.m.
