New London Police Make Arrest in Friday Shooting

Victim Found In The Street By Police

New London Police arrested a city man Friday night in connection with a shooting that happened on the street where the alleged assailant lives.

Maximiliano Purdu-Polido, 21, of 21 B Wightman St., was charged in connection with the shooting of an unidentified man who was found outside the house around 11:20 p.m., Friday night. Deputy Police Chief Marshall Segar said in a press release that Purdu-Polido confessed. Police will not release the victim’s name at this time.

Police officers responded to the area of Wightman Street and Maple Avenue for a report of shots fired and when officers arrived a gunshot victim was located on Wightman Street, the release said.

The victim was transported to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries.

The release said that information gathered by the officers led them to a second-floor apartment at the address. The release said that interviews with witnesses and a confession by the accused gave officers probable cause to believe that Purdu-Polido had shot the victim.

A search warrant was obtained for the apartment and when the warrant was executed a firearm, ammunition, several ounces of marijuana, approximately $1,000 in cash and at least five marijuana plants were discovered and seized, according to the release.

Donald L. Guilbert, 40, was charged with interfering with an officer.  Guilbert fled the scene when police arrived and he is a person of interest in this investigation, the release said.

The press release said that additional arrests are expected and the case is still under active investigation.  Purdu-Polida is being held on $ 100,000 bond and was charged with criminal attempt/assault first degree, reckless endangerment 1st degree, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and tampering with evidence.
