Small Fire at The Day Quickly Extinguished

The New London newsroom was evacuated, but the paper says no one was injured and damage was minimal.

A fire broke out Tuesday night in The Day's headquarters on Eugene O'Neill Drive.

The fire was reported just before 6:30 p.m., according to the Local 1522 on Twitter. Firefighters were working on the Atlantic Street side of the newspaper's building, and the fire was quickly reported to be knocked down, about 15 minutes later.

In an article posted to its website, The Day reports that the newspaper staff was forced to evacuate for about an hour while crews worked the scene.

The small fire appears to have started above a metal cabinet near the production area, according to The Day, and damage to its print products was limited thanks to firefighters' use of tarps.

"Great work by NLFD to quickly bring this job under control," the Local 1522 Tweeted just after 9 p.m.
