Fire damages home on Boulevard Court

Firefighters from around New London responded to a blaze that damaged a Boulevard Court home on Monday evening.

The was called to 2 Boulevard Court at 10:16 p.m. for a fire that had fully involved an exterior portion of the two story home. Fire Chief Ron Samul said the exterior of the building was damaged and the fire had started to spread to the interior before it was knocked down.

Firefighters removed Mary-Anne McIntyre and her dog, Rufus, from the house. Fire Chief Ron Samul said McIntyre was taken out of the house by firefighters and brought to .

Samul said exterior structure fires are more typical in the summer when grills or other heat sources on porches cause ignition. He said these kinds of fires can occur in the winter when coals are discarded outside, but said the fire remains under investigation.

Samul said the damage to the house can be repaired.

"It's basically superficial," said Samul. "I wouldn't want to place an estimate on it because I don't what kind of damage is on the inside."

Mayor Daryl Finizio, who was on Monday evening, was with Samul and Police Chief Margaret Ackley when the call came in and went to the scene with them.

"I was able to observe the city's response and I'm very pleased with the conduct and professionalism of all our emergency personnel," said Finizio.

Finizio recognized firefighter Kevin Johnson, saying he witnessed Johnson take McIntyre out of the building. Finizio also urged homeowners to have a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm, saying the house had neither.
