Bessie The Bloodhound Could Be Back On the Beat Soon

New London Police Department is actively searching for a new handler to keep the K-9 on the force.

There's been a lot of controversy around New London's K-9s but this week the news is good for a change. New London Police Department has announced that Bessie the bloodhound should be getting a new handler soon.

"The Police Department has solicited volunteers and is considering which officer will be the best fit to work with Bessie. In addition, a lesson plan for training is being developed for this canine, who works on a food-reward basis. We are also pleased to report that Bessie is performing better than expected. Tracking seems to be in this hound’s blood," New London Police posted on Facebook.

Bessie's future had been uncertain ever since her original handler, Kyle Gorra, left New London Police Department for the State Police. She had been biding her time in a kennel waiting to be reassigned to a different law enforcement agency. Public outcry over the dwindling numbers of New London's K-9s, however, prompted the city to rethink that decision.
