[UPDATED] Highway Open Again After Morning Accident Closes I-95 North at Exit 76

The afternoon commute should be better than this morning, when traffic was being detoured onto I-395 to Route 85 and then back onto I-95.

Interstate 95 Northbound is open again just in time for the afternoon commute. The highway was closed between Exits 76 and 81 in Waterford Wednesday morning after an early-morning motor vehicle accident involving a car and a tractor-trailer.

According to the state Department of Transportation, a tractor-trailer collided with a car near the I-395 Interchange. Police were directing traffic onto I-395 North to Exit 77 in Waterford, then onto Route 85 and back onto I-95 North at Exit 82.

The DOT expected the highway to be closed for several more hours as the accident was cleared. DOT crews were still on the scene at 3:30 p.m. but all lanes were open to traffic.

State Police at Troop E have no news on the status of anyone involved in the accident. Initial reports were that the tractor trailer driver, Sherman Adams, 51, of Edison, N.J., was pinned inside his vehicle and had to be extricated and rushed to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital to be treated for a head injury. He was later transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital.
