15 Men; One Gun; Four Arrests

New London police officers were called to Colman Street on Friday, July 18, after receiving a report of a large crowd and one man reportedly brandishing what was thought to be a handgun.

A concerned person called 911 at approximately 6:03 p.m. Friday, July 18, due to a large crowd in the area of 195 Colman St., New London. 

One of the men was reportedly brandishing a handgun, New London police said. When officers responded to the scene, they encountered approximately 15 men.

The man who allegedly had the gun fled on food toward the area of Walden and Jefferson Avenue. He was later apprehended by New London Police officers and a New London Police K9.

In the area where the man was apprehended, police found a facsimile firearm. 

A facsimile of a firearm is described as "(A) any nonfunctional imitation of an original firearm which was manufactured, designed and produced since 1898, or (B) any nonfunctional representation of a firearm other than an imitation of an original firearm, provided such representation could reasonably be perceived to be a real firearm.”

The following people were arrested:

  • Michael Escobales, 19, of 11 Michael Rd. Apt. I, New London, was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon, criminal trespass in the second degree; and possession of a hallucinogenic marijuana
  • Isaac Cabanas, 18, of 332 Jefferson Ave., New London, was charged with two counts of possession of narcotics
  • Jesse Beck, 19, of 207 Congdon Rd., Voluntown, was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon (brass knuckles located in his vehicle, according to police)
  • Shakim Curry, 24, no address given, was charged with interfering with police

Officers from Waterford Police Department and Groton City Police Department arrived to assist the New London officers in detaining and searching the other males on the scene.
