Patch’s Poll: Are We Better Prepared After Tropical Storm Irene?

As we look back on this one-year anniversary at the storm that caused damage and ushered in policy reforms from the governments, we ask, are we prepared if another storm hits?

Today marks the official one-year anniversary when Connecticut residents woke up to torrential rain, high winds and trees toppling under the weight of Tropical Storm Irene.

The storm blew through the state with winds at 60 mph, leaving over 700,000 homes and businesses without power and two deaths, as well as road closures, downed wires and property damage.

In the year since the storm hit, towns have taken more emergency preparedness steps. They’ve put money away for potential disaster situations, and revamped training in case another major weather event occurs.

The state has also implemented drills through the Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, on those emergency initiatives.

And, hopefully, residents have learned to take the necessary precautions when a big storm impacts the region, like stocking food and supplies properly.

One year after Irene hit, are we better prepared than we were before? Take our poll and share your thoughts in the comments.

We live completely off the grid, so the storm didn't effect us at all. We power are entire house, all 850 sq ft of it, with solar panels and an inverter. We have a huge battery bank housed in an attached shed. Propane is used for heating and cooking. We have a small generator for back up if needed.
Energy independence can be achieved, we're living proof. We have friends that recently built a 2,200sf house and they too are almost, totally energy independent; geothermal heat/cooling and solar water heater. They're planning on adding additonal solar panels, an inverter and large battery bank next year.

Does he live in the condo at the Harbor House? Does he rent it out? Is the house in Mansfield aRead More rental property? Does he think that just because he has a property in New London and may not truly reside in it, that he is a New London resident. I would be interested in hearing his spin on this.

You can fool some of the people some of the time but you can't fool all of the people when they haveRead More Kathleen Mitchell looking out for them. This is just sickening how with all the evidence that Kathleen has provided that Jeff Smith is not suspended as of today. The arrogance of this entire administration is beyond belief. I want to know what the Mayor has to say about this and I also would like to hear from Macrino, Hyslop and Passero.
