Patch's Poll: Do You Agree with the Supreme Court Decision to Uphold Obamacare?

The Supreme Court ruled today that the government can mandate that Americans purchase health insurance. We want your reactions to the news on Obamacare.

In a landmark decision, both legally and politically, the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld President Barack Obama's sweeping healthcare law , including the central mandate that individuals must buy health insurance.

The contentious portion of the law — which drew disputes among Congressional lawmakers in 2009 and was fought on legal grounds by Attorneys General across the United States since — is considered the “heart” of the law, according to CBS.

“The decision creates some certainty surrounding federal health care policy, allowing federal and state rulemakers to, for now, implement this law,” CBS said.

According to The Associated Press, the high court “rejected arguments that Congress went too far in requiring most Americans to have health insurance or pay a penalty.”

In the United States there are 30 million people today who go without insurance. Through the mandate, the law hopes to stem this problem, as well as .

Do you agree with the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling, which allows for lawmakers to mandate Americans purchase health insurance? Take our poll and share your thoughts in the comments.

To add to my other post cost will continue to rise. Sure everyone will be able to purchase but at what cost.

The gods honest truth . Pay attention. We should not be debating each other on this issue. The old time democrats do not exist anymore. The big time liberals have taken over your party. Do we need some inexperienced president to tell us what we should do or what we must do . Please use your common sense and follow the person not the party.

How right you are my last recollection of a good Democrat was Hubert Humphrey , a real statesman with the best for America on his adjenda .No one out there in the last 20 years even resembles those qualities ,
Alan Green, Jr. July 1, 2012 at 04:35 am
Lieberman - and his ally McCain - lead the charge to block the single payer option in the senate. Don't make me go and cut and past that stuff. You know that's true. Lieberman is NOT a democrat any more. He ran against the Dems. He voted WITH the republicans, so Obama never had a senate majority. Never did. Nope. And then along come Banard (sp?)... now there's a guy who wants to see every American insured, right?
And THIS small business owner holds faith in Democrats to do right by us; we're the engine of the middle class, the constituency of the Dems. Maybe rich small business owners who run hedge funds might support republicans, but those of us looking for tax breaks on employing local people count on Dems to give us that support. I've seen nothing from Republicans that supports anything except those that already have a LOT of money.
Alan Green, Jr. July 1, 2012 at 04:36 am
If this is the Repub plank for 2012, I don't think there's gonna be a problem for our boy. Barocky.

JudithAnn - We already have rationing of care. And we will not be able to get away from it any more than any other industrialized country - and I would say, nor should we. My aging Father and I discussed it today. We are keeping people alive in the last year of their life and prolonging illness and discomfort that we would not allow a dog to suffer. And we call it inhumane to discuss natural passage or encouraged passage. So you can call it 'rationing' or whatever you want to politicize it, but it's an important discussion a person needs to make with their PCP when they're healthy. The rationing is taking place already with the unequal system with wealth-poverty the deciding factor. A smarter healthcare system will allow for rational discussion about rationing and end of life decisions that need to be made. We owe that to our children; those we expect to insure us.
I thought it interesting that libertarianism and socialism unite in the concept of making tough decisions about last-year-of-life care, where upwards of 20-30% of all medical costs are spent.
Alan Green, Jr. July 1, 2012 at 04:52 am
I disagree, Sue. I think you need to look at the principles of the affiliation - i.e. what's the basic plank. Courtney supports what I support and I know that cause he's a Dem. Murphy supports what I support. I know that cause he's a Dem. Republicans do NOT support what I support. I believe in funding education with taxpayer money; giving marriage rights to gays; providing healthcare to all Americans. The truth is, Republicans don't. Plain and simple. I won't be voting for a Republican. Unless of course they tell me they're really a democrat.
My dear Mother votes for 'the person' and it drives me nuts! :D

Justin, I believe you're correct. This is an incredible overreach of our government. If this were a wonderful thing Congress and our President would not choose to be exempt. The AARP spent lots of time and money pushing for this but they were one of the first organizations to get a waiver. They do not have to abide by this for their employees. Many Unions helped "get the word out" then applied for waivers.
Sometimes it's hard to tell who's hand is in my pocket, the feds or the state. There is now no limit to what Government can tax us on...for our own good.
Cynthia Kozaczensky July 1, 2012 at 05:54 am
Let's get that fabled 28th amendment passed. Might change the way our lawmakers look at life. (yes, I know it's not real..but it should be.)
"Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States".
Cynthia Kozaczensky July 1, 2012 at 06:25 am
Many people may agree with some of the stipulations, but when you put them all together they have to be called something. And it would be something not very nice. 21 new taxes, even a tax against charitable hospitals. Watch out, your HSA is going to get taxed. The Day just did a poll, 48% very much against and 26% very much for.

To Quote"Pelosi: "We Have to Pass the Bill So That You Can Find Out What Is In It" ....Well now we will find out.
Rick McDonald July 1, 2012 at 01:34 pm
Hawkeye, auto insurance can be sold across state line. Health insurance cannot which helps keep costs up. The GBO, president Obama and others have already said that this law will not lower costs but that it will acutully push insurance and medical costs up.
John Butler July 1, 2012 at 06:09 pm
Our healthcare costs much more than other advanced nations and other nations' populations are more healthy, by any measure. And, of course, there are people here who don't have healthcare; not so in the healthy, less expensive advanced nations.
Glenn July 4, 2012 at 02:00 pm
healthcare in this country is nothing more than big business.let the pharmaceutical companies foot more of the cost of all this instead of passing the bill onto people that cant afford it
Glenn July 4, 2012 at 02:51 pm
doctors in this country are paid by the pharmaceuticals to prescribe medications that are not necessary and dangerous, just to boost profits. your best bet is to be your own healthcare adversary
Lauren MacArthur July 4, 2012 at 05:00 pm
Since 75% of the cost of providing diluted healthcare (which it will be, since established doctors are flying out of the profession, and we will be left with inexperienced doctors and bad doctors to do the job, and these inexperienced and bad doctors will be handling overwhelming numbers of patients) will be borne by citizens earning LESS THAN $120,000 per year, this "healthcare," which will be serving droves more of illegals and non-taxpayers (who are already being served in abundance), WILL collapse, along with all of us. It will cause employers to drop health care perks, and to hire fewer people. Many small businesses will disappear. This spells disaster for our already struggling economy, AND it will NOT provide the health care we need. People will receive a lick and a promise. Many, many more will die.
Cynthia Kozaczensky July 5, 2012 at 02:25 am
Absolutely correct. and which group was one of the first to apply for a waiver? AARP of course. While they are more than happy to profit from this disgusting mess, they have been granted the "exempt" permit. They do not have to follow the socialist path since they have already paid their dues by promoting this pile of garbage.

Remember to always read between the lines. Obama states kids 18-26yr old can stay on their parent's health plan. Not neccessarily. I am 55 on medicare and my
plan does not allow children to be added. There is a huge percentage of americans that fit this category. I have to pay out of pocket for a secondary insurance plan to cover my kids. Alot of folks 63 and older still have kids living at home. Also living on fixed incomes with medicare makes it VERY difficult to provide health ins for their kids 18-26. So-Obama has left a HUGE hole in his so-called health care reform.
Richard Poulton July 9, 2012 at 11:03 am
Is it true? Just got an e-mail that originated from a John Hill, Professor Emeritus, at Indiana University School of Business, who reports that hiden in this packae of garbage and public not told for its an election year, is that Medicare Part B premiums will rise to $247.00 in 2014 to help cover the cost of Obamacare. Thats after going up to $120.20 in 2013.
If true, is this purposely being kept secret from seniors due to the upcoming elections? I sent my senator this questions, lets see if he responds.

REVMAN July 13, 2012 at 03:33 pm
Almost all these 18-26 year olds spent $100+ a month($1200 per year)for their cell phones that they HAVE to have, then about $400-$600 for the newest and best IPHONE.Add that all up for the it is well over $10,000 over the time Mommy&Daddy pay for their healthcare Ins.They would NEVER sacrifice that cell phone for insurance.

Thomas C. If you think OUR country is the wealthiest nation in the WORLD then why do we BORROW money from China??Tell that wealth story to the millions 12.7 of unemployed ,and the 30 million people on Social Security not to mention Medicaid and wellfare recipt. The Middle class is NOW in a LOWER middle class if that.
REVMAN July 14, 2012 at 02:25 pm

This is the best wake up call we have ever had , let us see if it creates the change needed to restore America to the image that we once had. November will tell the story and aside from the President all the rest of our " leaders " are subject to the popular vote .
Clark van der Lyke July 14, 2012 at 03:26 pm
Elissa...ye of little faith. Don't destroy the myth that the public has comprehension and much to impart on such complex issues. Congress certainly didn't understand the health care issue and the Supreme Court just tried to avoid adding themselves to the train wreck passenger list. Oh, for simpler days before we created a national Gong Show named Obamacare. I would like to hear what the 17 year olds think. Then again, I heard a 17 year old "like" talking at "like" the mall last week, like perhaps not.

You can fool some of the people some of the time but you can't fool all of the people when they haveRead More Kathleen Mitchell looking out for them. This is just sickening how with all the evidence that Kathleen has provided that Jeff Smith is not suspended as of today. The arrogance of this entire administration is beyond belief. I want to know what the Mayor has to say about this and I also would like to hear from Macrino, Hyslop and Passero.

I suggested this idea at least 6 months ago- watching the city council meetings over time I thoughtRead More "how arrogant this guy is"- he doesn't feel our pain so he probably doesn't live in NL- someone should have caught onto this a couple of years ago- Again I say, if you want to work for the city of NL you MUST live in the city of NL- otherwise you really don't care what happens here- you're not really invested in our city- you can't take a paycheck and run to a nice suburban town where taxes are lower than NL-
