My Dog

LEE ELCI from News Talk 980 WXLM

Yes, I like my dog better than you. In most cases its not that I don’t like you, but I just like my dog better.

To set the record straight, I have a ten-year-old Golden Retriever who takes more pills than Michael Jackson (whoops too soon?) OK, more pills than Elvis. Prednisone, benedryl, glucosamine, as well as a couple of other pills that even spell check can’t get right. If you are wondering his name is Bailey and he stands just over 2 feet tall and checks in a little (a lot) over 100lbs. He has cancer, a bad hip, he’s a little too fat, and he is prone to the occasional bout of halitosis. But, he is my main man and without him I would be a lost soul.

Those of you out there with dogs know what I am talking about so this blog is more for the people in the world who simply don’t get it. The people who look at me cross-eyed when I tell them that I have been sleeping on the floor downstairs for the past 2 weeks because “Bailey’s” hip is hurting and he is having trouble with the stairs. This blog is for the people who seem confused when I tell them that I have spent thousands of dollars keeping him well and thousands more making him better. This blog is for the people who act as if I were insane when I explain that I can’t go on vacation because I refuse to kennel my dog.

My day starts with “Bailey” sleeping like a baby at the foot of my bed as my alarm goes off at 4:00am. My day ends with him doing the same. He is never more than 3 feet from me when I am home. This blog is for the folks who just don’t get it. He may look like a dog, he may smell like a dog, he may act like a dog, but he is more than that. He’s my friend. In fact he is my best friend.

I know it may sound sappy but dogs give you something no human can “ unconditional love. Yep I said it. The word unconditional as far as people go just doesn’t work. People will always have an agenda or at the very least their love will come with certain conditions. So I guess my point is if you really need a friend. Shelters are your salvation. Rescue a dog , you will never be the same. One last thing: never say to me, “But Lee, he is just a dog”.
