Grant Awarded to the New London Homeless Hospitality Center

The New London Homeless Hospitality Center was awarded a $55,000 grant from the Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority (CHEFA) as part of its Not-for-Profit Grant Program.

The New London Homeless Hospitality Center is a 50 bed respite as well as a daytime hospitality center providing practical assistance to our homeless neighbors in New London County. Guests receive assistance with; job searches and applications, obtaining legal documents, linkage with mental health and addiction services, mail and phone services, VNA health care, and much more.

With this grant we seek the resources to implement one thoroughly proven intervention—called rapid rehousing—for our emergency shelter. With the right resources we are confident that we can get people out of the shelter more quickly thereby allowing us to serve more people with the same number of shelter beds. Moving people out of shelter more quickly also reduces the risk of future homelessness because it keeps people connected to their support network, reduces the trauma of homelessness, limits the impact on physical health and gets people back to work more quickly.

CHEFA recently announced $1 million in grants to 23 nonprofit agencies throughout the state.  CHEFA is a quasi-public agency created by the State Legislature to help Connecticut healthcare and educational institutions, and other not-for-profit entities obtain tax exempt financing.  CHEFA is self-sustaining and receives no taxpayer funds.  For more information about CHEFA, visit www.chefa.com.
