The has announced that it will provide free mosquito control services and advice to residents in New London and surrounding areas.
Ledge Light says in a press release that the services aim to reduce the spread of mosquito-borne diseases such as . The State Mosquito Management Program has detected West Nile virus in mosquitoes in 40 Connecticut towns as of Wednesday, and cases of EEE have been discovered as well.
Health officials urge residents to empty standing water on their properties to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. These can include clogged gutters, water-filled depressions, and birdbaths. Where water cannot be discarded, residents may treat the water with "mosquito dunks," a naturally occurring biological larvacide.
Ledge Light is offering to visit properties to assess standing water issues and make recommendations to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. The visit may also include an intial mosquito dunk treatment. The services are available to residents in New London, East Lyme, Groton, Ledyard, and Waterford.
