From New London Police Department's Facebook Page:

The New London Police Department is not only proud of our exceptional officers, but also their amazing families.

For the past five years, Vanessa Bertsch has been part of an effort titled “TGIF - Turn Grease Into Fuel”, which works with restaurants to donate grease that is, then, turned into biodiesel to help heat the homes of those in need. On Friday, TGIF donated 1,000 gallons of heating fuel to charity in New London

TGIF was started and is organized by children. The group was named one of “CNN Heroes Young Wonders” for 2012. (http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/bestoftv/2012/12/19/cnnheroes-cassandra-lin.cnn.html)

If you are interested in learning more about TGIF and how you can help, you can watch the linked video, where Vanessa is prominently pictured working diligently over the years, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLWh3cOvwbU) , visit the organization’s website at http://www.w-i-n.ws/index.htm or type “tgif turn grease into fuel” into Google or YouTube.

The New London Police Department is extremely proud of your accomplishments, Vanessa, and proud to call you a member of our family. Keep up the good work!

The grease the restaurants are donating is the waste vegetable oil (wvo) from the deep-fryers or yellow grease. Grease trap waste is brown grease. Brown grease ends up in landfill. A great restaurant technology is the GRD or grease recovery device. The GRD recovers the fats, oils, and grease (FOG) from restaurant wastewater. The recovered grease can be recycled with the yellow grease as opposed to going to landfill. A GRD is a win-win for the restaurant and the environment as grease does not get into the sewer and recovered grease does not go to landfill. see www.greasetrap.ca
