One Year - Many Accomplishments
A symposium, tours, outreach and a dash of controversy -- success in 2011 can be measured in many ways, including  the Sentinels on the Sound Lighthouse Weekend, Benedict Arnold's return, our Lighthouse Kids enrichment program with the public schools, the One Big Table community dinner!

Dear Friend of the Custom House,

Find out what's happening in New Londonwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

The New London Maritime Society works year-round to bring our maritime heritage to life! And, once every year, we reach out and ask you for your support.

We had a terrific 2011: the 1st annual Sentinels on the Sound Celebration of New London's Lighthouse Heritage -- a weekend of regional lighthouse events--brought visitors to New London from as far away as Texas; One Big Table -- the food event of the year -- was a community feast celebrating the rich gastronomic diversity of our city. We presented special exhibitions; took you on trips by bus and by sea; sponsored our annual Chowda' Fest, Cribbage Fest and Reid MacCluggage Black Maritime History Scholarship; held monthly Jibboom Club gatherings; and partnered with the New London Public Schools in the successful, year-long Lighthouse Kids enrichment program and Lighthouse Kids Sea Shanty Chorus. Economically-speaking, yes, it was another challenging year. But with your generous support and the work of our enthusiastic & diligent volunteers (and one employee), we managed to grow our programs while still fulfilling our mission: to preserve the 1833 Robert Mills Custom House and New London Harbor Light.

We are your local, independent, community-minded museum--a cultural anchor in downtown New London. Culture creates vibrancy. By contributing to the Society's Annual Fund, you provide the essential day-to-day support that enables us to preserve and present New London's stories and, by doing so, help revitalize New London's historic waterfront. What's coming up in 2012?--Anne Kubitsky's community Look for the Good project, partnership in a regional War of 1812 exhibition, establishing New London as the hub of a Connecticut Lighthouse Trail, a 2nd Lighthouse Weekend, and much much more.
