THE FRIENDS OF FORT TRUMBULL S.P. announce their 2014 PROGRAM SERIES

2014 will be a year that will focus on news about the Charles W. Morgan, the only surviving wooden whaling ship in the world.  In 2014, the Charles W. Morgan will set sail again from the Mystic Seaport on its 38th voyage- 172 years after her first!  In the spring of 2014, the restored ship will be towed to New London for final outfitting and ballasting.  In the summer of 2014, it will begin a six-week voyage to Newport, R.I., Martha’s Vineyard, New Bedford, Provincetown, Mass., the Stellwagen Bank, Boston, and then home to Mystic, Ct.

We will begin our 2014 season with a presentation on the Charles W. Morgan.  The next month we will hear Songs of the Sea.  In June, we will be treated to a performance that spotlights Whaling Wives, and in July, we will explore New London’s most famous author Eugene O’Neill and his fascination with the sea.

This focus on our Whaling past will also be combined with a consideration of the critical issues of ocean stewardship and the impact of human activities on the oceans.  In August, we will hear a presentation on Climate Change and Coastal Change.  The next month we will focus on the Economic Issues of the Port of New London and Economic Development.  Finally, to conclude our series we will be honored to welcome the Superintendent of the United States Coast Guard Academy, who will discuss the history of the Academy and New London, the future of the Coast Guard, and the new Coast Guard Museum to be located in New London.

There is also an exhibit at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum that you won’t want to miss- called “Greasy Luck: The Whaling World of the Charles W. Morgan”.  This exhibit grew out of a partnership with Mystic Seaport, in honor of the newly restored whaling ship.  It will trace the history of whaling in New London which-at its height- was the third-busiest whaling port in the world.   “Greasy Luck” runs to June 8, 2014.  You won’t want to miss this exhibit which will illuminate our 2014 season.  Free admission at the museum from 10 a.m. to noon on the first Saturday of every month. www.lymanallyn.org

The Friends’ lecture series will begin in April and run until October, 2014.  All presentations will begin at 7 p.m. at the Conference Center at Fort Trumbull State Park.  Dates and presenters will be publicized at a later date. The programs are open to the public and free of charge.
