Feeling Cuba: Presented by the Latin Network for the Visual Arts & Provenance Center
The
Latin Network for the Visual Arts highlights works by Cuban artists in the
exhibition “Feeling Cuba,” opening Jan. 19, 2014, at Provenance Center, 165 State St., and
running through Feb. 16.
The
show features a mix of paintings, cut-drawings, photography, collage and mixed
media by Cuban artists. An opening reception will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.,
Sunday, Jan. 19, at the gallery.
For
most of us, Curator and Gallery Director Nadesha Mijoba says, Cuba remains an enigma, a country
hidden from view, while a treasure in our midst.

“Never
has any man seen such a beautiful place,” Christopher Columbus wrote in his
Oct. 28, 1492, ship’s log.
Yet
despite his visual epiphany and that of others exploring the West Indies in the
15th century, Cuba
– the largest island in the Caribbean Sea – remains
concealed from our view. Why is this? Twentieth century political policies? Or
is it the paradox of being so close to the United States but so far from
familiar social and cultural norms?

us as we help bring people closer to the life of Cuba, to feel the presence of this
geographically intimate neighbor and to explore the richness of this great island and its people.
